Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is the system of yoga taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India. This method of Yoga involves synchronizing the breath with progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.
It is referred to as Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga in order to distinguish it from PataƱjali's philosophical teachings of the eight-fold path to enlightenment.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is often called power yoga. It is a high energy yoga, challenging and fulfilling - a vigorous physical and psychological discipline which strengthens body and mind. It is a set series of postures designed to flow with the breath - movement with breath facilitating meditation. The physical postures relax, tone and rejuvenate the body while the breath calms and centres the mind.
Ashtanga is very upper-body, strength and movement focused, and therefore improves cardiac fitness and is conducive to weight loss.
